Pedagogical, Ethical, and Scientific Responses to the New Earth

Pedagogies of Hope: Teaching as the World Burns
Environmental politics courses typically strike a somber tone. Yet courses that sway too strongly towards doom and gloom are not likely to pique long-term interest in students nor to best prepare them for life on the new earth. What, then, are our obligations as educators concerned with environmental matters? With what intellectual and other tools should our students be equipped? This will be a chance to talk about emerging teaching strategies, technologies, and resources. More importantly, though, this session will offer an opportunity to reflect on the evolving mission of environmental educators as the global environmental condition continues to deteriorate.

Narrative Frames for Living on a New Earth
Living on a new earth means experiencing severe ecological change. As the global resource base shrinks, sinks fill, and landscapes degrade, how will humanity live together? Will people embrace a survivalist mentality and try to wall themselves off of others in an attempt to flourish and survive? Will new cooperative sensibilities emerge, informed by ethical traditions, in which our humanity will be particularly expressed? What will the North-South divide look like as we experience increasing global environmental harm?

Energy on a New Planet
The climate change / energy nexus has been evolving rapidly over the last decade. There are few more pressing challenges than this one, and few more active areas of research. What do we know about the potential for large-scale energy transformation and effective global responses to climatic change? What questions remain to be asked and answered?

Facilitator: Miquel Muñoz
Room: Hochelaga 5
Participants: Kate Goodwin, Michael Gunter, Markus Lederer, Paula Duarte Lopes, Jack Manno, Bryan McDonald, Miranda Schreurs, Scott Valentine, Harro van Asselt, Stacy VanDeveer

Science, Media, and Policy Creation on a New Planet
Addressing today’s environmental challenges requires integrating scientific knowledge, policy entrepreneurship, and media facility. A first take at the environmental policymaking process suggests that scientists identify and map the contours of a problem, the media processes them, and the policy world then decides upon and implements an effective political response. Yet the truth of the process is, of course, much more complex. How can these different disciplines work together more effectively to produce action?
